Adding a Little Flow

January 6th, 2012

Sometimes we will find yourself in an apartment or house that feels stuffy and constricting. You might be surprised to find out that this feeling comes from your living space being jumbled and lacking in flow. There are a few basic tips, from no doors to automatic dog doors, which will help you move through your space more easily.
Make sure that you can draw an unobstructed line between the doors in a room. You want a straight line of movement between rooms and if your couch is blocking the line between the kitchen and the bedroom you may find yourself cooking less than you really want to. I know that seems a bit silly but try it and you’ll see. The little bit of extra effort that you don’t even notice consciously will have an effect on your behavior.
In the same way, you should open up your windows and take down your blinds. If you want to block a little light then get flowing drapes. They can be more easily opened and look more beautiful but on top of that they add to the idea of natural flow. You want to have nothing rigid and solid between you and the outside world. Otherwise, your mind is like a log without dog doors. You are just waiting for something else to let you go outside but there is something holding you back. It’s subtle but the influence is there.
Take down your doors. Of course, you need to have your doors to the outside for security purposes but, if you can, have those open. If you have small children and animals that you don’t want running free then get a screen door. I you have children that you need to keep in but want your animals to go free then get electric dog doors. Tailor the doors to your needs but try to keep them as open as possible. Inside, there should be as few doors as possible. If you want privacy for certain rooms then I suggest getting long curtains.
Use bright colors in your living space and have lots of light. Use mirrors to reflect light if possible. If you have mirrors in every room you may be surprised how open the rooms feel. Don’t block the windows with shelving or TVs or anything else. If you haven’t picked up on it yet, this is all about light. You need to make sure the light is unobstructed and as bright as possible.
